What is a coin roll?

Banks and mints wrap coins in rolls so they can be counted, transported and handed out easily. A roll contains a fixed number of coins of the same denomination, for example 25 coins for €1 and €2 rolls.

For collectors, rolls are interesting because they are often a source of uncirculated coins. Some mints and central banks sell special rolls of new commemorative coins, sometimes with decorated wrappers.

Searching through rolls from the bank, also called roll hunting, is a popular way to find coins that are missing from a collection without paying more than face value.
