Spain is a country in southwestern Europe. It is a country with very different cultures, languages, eating habits and climates. Spain started minting euro coins in 1999.
Spain has issued 16 regular coins and 29 commemorative coins.
The Spanish euro coins feature three different designs: the €1 and €2 coins depict King Juan Carlos I, the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins feature the portrait of Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote), and the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins show the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
Following King Juan Carlos I's abdication in 2014, the €1 and €2 coins now feature a portrait of the new monarch, King Felipe VI, while the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins retain their previous designs.
