What Is a Proof Coin?

Proof coins are made using specially prepared dies and blanks, often with multiple strikes to bring out fine details. Many modern Proof coins have mirror-like backgrounds and frosted designs, although the exact finish can vary.

Proof describes how a coin was made, not its current condition. A Proof coin can still develop scratches, fingerprints or other damage. These coins are usually sold in protective collector packaging.
