Every euro coin on Coinection has a rarity score between 1.0 and 5.0, shown with colored text on top of the coin page. The score tells you at a glance how scarce a coin is for collectors, based on official mintage figures. We try to make this as transparent as possible, and this page will help to explain how the scoring works.

The score is based on official mintage figures and uses a dual-bucket approach to reflect that not all coins of the same design belong to the same supply bucket:
Coins struck for general circulation share the same design across years: a French 1 euro coin from 2002 looks the same as one from 2020, and they circulate together. So all circulation mintages are summed across every year the coin was issued. This total determines how likely you are to find the coin "in the wild".
Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof coins are different issues for each year: a 2010 BU set is a separate item from a 2011 BU set. So we take the median yearly mintage of BU and Proof quantities. This reflects how hard it is for a collector to obtain a typical year's collector-grade coin.
The final score is determined by whichever bucket is harder to find. For a coin struck mainly for circulation (like the mentioned French 1 euro), the circulation bucket dominates: millions were minted, so the score is low. For a coin sold only in sets (like those from Vatican City) or the Cyprus 2024 commemorative coin, the circulation bucket is (nearly) empty and the collector bucket takes over, giving a high score that reflects each year's true scarcity.

Without separating the buckets, a coin like the previously mentioned French 1 euro coin would score very high. The coin was only minted in circulation quantities for three years (from 1999 until 2001), then switched to BU and Proof only. But millions of those early coins are still in circulation across Europe. A single bucket looking at the "typical year" would miss that the coin is actually very common in your wallet.
The same applies to coins like the Dutch 2 euro coin with the Beatrix obverse or the German 1 euro coin: most years were only struck for sets, but the early circulation years produced enough coins to make them easy to find.
Rarity is perceived in ratios, not in absolute numbers. The difference between 10.000 and 100.000 minted coins feels enormous, while the difference between 1.000.000 and 1.090.000 barely matters, even though both differ by 90.000 coins. A logarithmic scale matches that perception: each step on the scale represents a tenfold difference in mintage.
