The Treaty of Rome is a treaty that marks a pivotal moment in the history of the European Union. The treaty laid the foundation for what is now the European Union. This treaty was signed by the six founding nations: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The Treaty of Rome treaty established the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM), setting Europe on a path toward economic integration and political cooperation.
The treaty of Rome was revolutionary for its time. It fostered peace, economic growth and stability on a continent recovering from World War II. By reducing trade barriers and promoting free movement of goods, people, services, and capital, the treaty envisioned a united Europe that would stand stronger together. It also laid the groundwork for later treaties, including the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, which created the euro currency. Read more about the history of the euro in our in-depth article. The Treaty of Rome was signed on March 25, 1957.
50 years after the treaty was signed, Europe marked the 50th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the eurozone countries issued a 2 euro coin. The design of the commemorative coin features:
A depiction of the Treaty itself: An open book, symbolizing the Treaty of Rome, lies atop a stylized representation of the Capitoline Hill in Rome, where the treaty was signed.
"50 ANNI TRATTATI DI ROMA" (50 Years of the Treaty of Rome): This phrase is inscribed prominently, commemorating the anniversary.
The year "2007" and the name of the issuing country: Each participating eurozone country added its national identifier to the design, making each coin unique while maintaining a cohesive theme.
The 12 stars of the European Union: Encircling the design, these stars represent unity and solidarity among the EU member states.
The design of Luxembourg also features the grand duchy of Luxembourg Henri I. The grand duchy was added to the design because the Luxembourg constitution requires it.
